As a child, I’ve noticed people will shame you for your race/ethnicity. The language, the food, the entire culture to the point where children change themselves, resent their immigrant parents and deny parts of their heritage.
And then, as an adult people will shame you for not embracing who you are, your culture and say things like “I wish I was _____, it’s so interesting.” “You don’t speak _____? That’s a shame. Why not?”
Now I see all these white people on Facebook and Tumblr talking about social justice and acceptance. The same people who as children would pester and ask about other’s cultures and say “ewwww that’s weird” but are asked to be forgiven since they were “just children” and “they weren’t thinking”. And yet, POCs are still supposed to held accountable for how they felt as a child? We’re supposed to feel responsible for the pain inflicted from others? Their cruelty is given a free pass, but our insecurity as children is still OUR fault?
Oh, hell no.
